Welcome to Monklands Hockey Club
Monklands Hockey Club is a Scottish hockey club based in the Coatbridge and Stepps areas of North Lanarkshire. The Club has been around in one form or another for twenty-eight years and has achieved significant success given its size.
The Club was founded in 1982 as a junior club – a ladies’ section was added later, followed by a men’s section, which played for six years before disbanding. The ladies and juniors continued and, in 2007, the current men’s section was added.
Throughout the Club's history, the focus has been on developing young talent to ensure that both the current and future generations of local youngsters in the Monklands area continue to play the sport of hockey.
Many junior players have represented the Club over the years and, we are delighted to say, that they have been successful in both indoor and outdoor competitions. Three players have represented Scotland at all age groups (including Scott McCartney); thirty-six players have represented the West District at Inter-District (U18) competitions and there are seven players in our current squad that have played for West District.
In season 2010-11, the men’s team will compete outdoors in Division 1 of the West District League for the first time - they will also continue to play in the West District Indoor League over the winter months, whilst our women’s team will only play in the Women's West District Indoor League .
The current men’s team started in the lowest division of the West District League, Division 4, in season 2007-08 and won at their first attempt. In addition to winning the title, the team were also the proud recipients of the, “West District Fair Play Trophy”, ahead of 48 teams from across the west of Scotland. What made their achievement all the more special, is that they won the championship with a small squad made up of players aged between 15 and 21. The team repeated their success in season 2008-09, remaining unbeaten on their way to winning the West District League Division 3 title. This winning form continued in season 2009-10 culminating in a third successive divisional title win in Division 2.
Monklands’ home games are played at the University of Strathclyde Playing Fields at Millerston, or at Dalziel Park, near Motherwell. The players are coached by Sheila Moodie who taught P.E. at Coatbridge High School for over twenty years.
Training takes place on Tuesday nights between 9.00 pm and 10.30 pm and on Thursdays between 8.15 pm and 10.00 pm at the Time Capsule in Coatbridge. New players are always welcome, irrespective of ability. Anyone interested in joining Monklands Hockey Club should email us with their details, using the “Contact Us” form on the Club’s website, or come along to a training night at the Time Capsule.
